University of Miami
The University of Miami is a private research university located in the city of Coral Gables, Florida. Founded in 1925 by George Merrick, the school was initially established as a women’s college called the University of Miami Hurricane. After suffering through financial setbacks during World War II, the school became co-ed and earned its current name in 1959. The university has grown to become one of top universities for business and medicine in both Florida and the nation at large. Today, it comprises 12 schools and colleges offering more than 180 programs, enrolling over 19,096 students from all 50 states and over 100 countries around the globe. In addition to their on-campus academic offerings, Miami offers an array of online degree programs that cater to working professionals. The university also houses several nationally ranked athletic teams under their Hurricanes moniker.
