Permanente Medical Group
The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG) was established in 1945 as the first group practice of its kind. It began when industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and experienced physician Sidney Garfield teamed up to provide health care to the employees and dependents of the Kaiser Steel Company in Oakland, California, U.S.. In 1943 TPMG opened a new medical facility named The Permanente Hospital which would become part of what is now known as Kaiser Permanente. The group has grown significantly over time, currently serving over 11 million patients at over 700 locations throughout Northern California, Southern California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington and Colorado. TPMG is one of the largest medical groups in the United States with more than 1600 physicians and 19000 other clinicians offering health care services through integrated systems such as hospitals, specialty centers and medical offices. Focusing on preventive care to keep members healthy rather than treating illnesses after they have developed helps reduce overall healthcare costs for everyone involved while ensuring optimal patient results remain unchanged or improved over time. This approach has helped make TPMG a leader in providing quality care since its founding days more than 70 years ago.
