Nucor
Nucor Corporation is an American steel producer and one of the largest steel producers in the United States. Founded by Ransom E. Olds as North Carolina Steel Corporation in 1940 with its headquarters located in Charlotte, North Carolina, Nucor was initially created to recycle scrap metals from government sanctioned manufacturing facilities into spare parts for Oldsmobile cars. During World War II, these recycled products were converted into ammunition and other essential war materials. After the war ended, North Carolina Steel shifted focus to producing steel beams and merchant bars for construction and industrial applications. In 1955, a merger between Nucor and known competitor Vulcraft Corp ultimately led to the establishment of Nucor-Vulcraft Group Inc., which was subsequently renamed “Nucor” in 1964. This marks the start of a new era for Nucor when they began expanding their product offerings beyond just merchant bars to include rebar frames, joists and metal roofing components all produced mainly through an electric arc furnace method that enabled them to be more cost efficient while still maintaining means of a high quality product.
