Norfolk Southern
The Norfolk Southern Corporation is an American public transportation company based in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1982 and originally known as the Norfolk & Western Railway, the company transports a wide range of cargo items including coal and chemicals, as well as offering intermodal services. The system operates over 20,000 miles of railroad service throughout 23 states and connects with other railroads across North America. In addition to its vast network of track, the company also owns numerous docks along multiple major waterways leading to global markets. It was formed when the Norfolk & Western Railroad and Southern Railroad were merged together following increased competition from trucks after deregulation of the industry in 1980. The two companies had already been connected for more than 80 years before merging their operations for efficiency’s sake due to their largely complementary routes. Norfolk Southern Corporation has grown since then into one of America’s largest freight transportation companies with 2018 revenues reaching $11 billion USD.
