Monsanto Company
Monsanto Company is a multinational agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology company headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. Founded in 1901 by John Francis Queeny, Monsanto originally produced food additives such as saccharin and vanillin. The company went on to develop more agrochemicals like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) for industrial applications and DDT for use as an insecticide. In the 1970s and 1980s, Monsanto diversified into Agricultural Biotechnology with the development of herbicides such as glyphosate as well as genetically modified organisms (GMO’s). Today, Monsanto is one of the largest seed companies in the world producing GMO seeds, proprietary herbicides and other crop protection chemicals used in agriculture around the globe. Its products are designed to help farmers increase yield while decreasing costs associated with weed control and pest management.
