HBC
HBC, also known as Hudson’s Bay Company, is a Canadian retail business and one of the oldest commercial corporations in North America. Founded in 1670 by Royal Charter from King Charles II of England, HBC operates department stores, e-commerce sites, home outfitters and off-price stores across Canada and around the world as well as providing financial services through its wholly owned subsidiary HBC Financial Services. In its early years, HBC traded fur and other natural resources with Indigenous people throughout what has now become Eastern Canada. In 1814 it opened the first Northern store in York Factory on Hudson Bay (now Churchill) followed by an extensive network of trading posts which continued to expand until the late 19th century when gold was discovered in Yukon Territory. By this time, HBC had begun to open retail stores throughout Canada offering a wide range of merchandise including clothing, electronics and furniture. As of 2020, there are 90 full line department stores operating under the HBC name which includes iconic brands such as Lord & Taylor + Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH + Holt Renfrew + GALERIE de la Capitale + Home Outfitters + HomeSense+ Sport Chek & Atmosphere.
