First Data is a leading provider of commerce-enabling technology and solutions for credit card processing, merchant services, payment security services, and business analytics. Founded in 1971 by Frank X. Martire, it started as a small software company specializing in real-time transaction processing software for the banking industry. In the 1990s First Data developed some of the first point-of-sale (POS) payment acceptance systems allowing banks to break into the fast growing ecommerce market. By 2000 they had become one of only four major credit card processors in the U.S., also providing certificates over public networks that allowed businesses to offer secure online transactions. Over time they continued to grow their suite of products and services, acquiring numerous new companies including Money Network in 2004, Western Union in 2006 and Payco American Corporation in 2013 which allowed them to expand their range of offerings further into payments management, debit cards and money order services. Today First Data has sales representatives around the world working with millions of merchants ranging from small retail stores to larger institutions like universities or government agencies giving them access to secure payments across multiple channels with intelligence built into each transaction through advanced data analytics capabilities.
