Ecolab is an American multinational corporation that specializes in providing water, hygiene, food products and services for public venues and commercial customers. Founded in 1923 by McCord White and Merritt J. Osborn as Economics Laboratory Inc., it was initially focused on providing cleaning solutions for the hospitality industry. In succeeding years, Ecolab shifted its focus to food safety solutions and quickly became a leader in this field. In 1994, Ecolab launched an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). This enabled employees of the company to purchase company stock at discounted rates after they had been employed with Ecolab for one year or more. After employee distributions began in 1997, over 3 million shares were distributed to 8500 eligible employees worldwide through this program. The ESOP plan currently holds roughly 9% of outstanding shares of Ecolab common stock and is administered by a trustee appointed by the company’s board of directors. Today, Ecolab is considered one of the top providers of cleaning products and services in both commercial and residential spaces worldwide.
