Academy Sports + Outdoors is a premier sports, outdoor and lifestyle retailer with a broad assortment of quality hunting, fishing and camping equipment and gear along with sports and leisure products, footwear, apparel and much more. The company was founded in 1938 as Academy Tire Shop by Max Gochman in San Antonio, Texas. In 1940 Academy began selling military surplus items such as work clothes, ammunition boxes and jeep parts. Gochman passed away in 1967 but his family kept the business going by expanding into sporting goods the following year. Growing to 22 stores throughout its home state before making the leap to neighboring Louisiana in 1988. By 1997 they had reached 90 store locations across five different states which marked their move into opening larger stores that also carried clothing lines for all ages. Throughout its history it has maintained a commitment to providing competitive prices on top brands while maintaining high customer service standards; both factors contributing to its continued success today with 250 location nationwide serving millions of customers each year.
