Urban Outfitters
Urban Outfitters is an American multinational lifestyle retail corporation specializing in consumer goods. The company was founded in 1970 by Richard Hayne, Scott Belair and Jerry Szczepanski under the name of Free People. The first store was opened on South Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Soon after, additional stores were opened in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York. In 1984 Urban Outfitters began to expand outside of the United States opening their first store in London, England. By 1987 they had grown to over 20 stores worldwide in cities like Toronto and Tokyo. In 1998 they launched their website followed by their expansion into home furnishings with its purchase of Leifsdottir (now Anthropologie) in 2004 which allowed them to offer more than just apparel and accessories. Today the company operates more than 200 stores in North America as well as locations around the world including Europe, Asia, Australia and South America. Additionally they have a large online presence through both their own site as well as through third-party e-commerce sites such as Amazon and eBay where customers can buy products from over 36 countries around the globe.
