St. Louis University (SLU) is a private research university located in St. Louis, Missouri. Established in 1818 by the Louisiana Purchase, SLU was the first university west of the Mississippi River and is the oldest Jesuit institution in the United States. The school has been accredited since 1912 and provides more than 13,000 undergraduate and graduate students from around the world with degree programs across its 10 colleges and schools. In addition to its main campus in Midtown St. Louis, SLU maintains international campuses in Madrid, Spain; Angers, France; Dingle, Ireland; Vienna-Krems, Austria; and Cha-Am Hua Hin International Campus in Thailand. SLU also has an extensive medical center that includes two health sciences campuses along with multiple outreach and research sites throughout Missouri and Illinois. Each year, faculty members receive millions of dollars in funded research grants from various federal agencies like NASA to conduct groundbreaking studies on areas such as health care delivery systems, infectious diseases, and space exploration technologies including solar flares on astronauts during their missions to outer space .
