Western Digital Corporation is an American computer data storage company headquartered in San Jose, California. Founded in 1970 by Alvin B. Phillips, the company began by focusing on manufacturing third-party semiconductor components and later transitioned to producing its own memory chips and integrated circuits. At present, Western Digital has seven business units: Client Solutions, Data Center Devices Solutions, Client Computing Components, Data Center Systems and Software Solutions, Internet of Things (IoT) Solutions and Removable Storage. The company’s primary products are hard disk drives (HDD), solid-state drives (SSDs), external storage solutions like Zip drivers and portable enclosures for HDDs as well as cloud service solutions centered on NAS systems. Western Digital is a leader in the global HDD industry with about one-third market share globally and more than 60% share in the U.S., according to International Data Corporation results for 2019. It also ranks first among high capacity SSD providers worldwide with a 44% market share as of 2020 figures from Statista Market Forecast Modeling Toolbox.
