Vitalant Inc. (formerly Blood Centers of the Pacific) is a nonprofit community blood service provider, supporting over 80 hospitals and health care partners in communities across California, Oregon, Washington and Arizona. It operates the world’s first comprehensive online donation platform for lifelong sharing of blood donations to ensure maximum patient benefit from donated products. Founded in 1943 as one of the first community-based, non-profit blood centers in America by visionary Dr Stafford Warren at General Hospital San Francisco it has since grown into one of the largest non-profit transfusion medicine organizations in America with 10 donor centers and more than 40 collection sites throughout its service area. Vitalant’s mission is to be “the preeminent life sciences organization dedicated to improving people’s lives through innovation and excellence in transfusion medicine.” In addition to collecting and distributing lifesaving blood products for patients with trauma injuries or serious medical conditions, they also provide patient services such as antibody testing, red cell compatibility testing, direct access apheresis services and tissue typing associated with bone marrow transplantation.
