Umg Recordings, Inc., formerly known as Universal Music Group (UMG), is a major music company owned by Vivendi and headquartered in California. UMG produces, distributes, and promotes some of the most popular artists in the world across all genres. Established in 1934 as Decca Records, UMG has been through many iterations before its current form was established. In 1989 Polygram bought Decca Records and merged it with several other record labels to create Polygram Entertainment. Seven years later MCA Music Entertainment Group acquired Polygram Entertainment and changed its name to Universal Music Group (UMG). Today UMG is the largest music company in the world and represents over 60% of market share globally. It owns dozens of iconic labels such as Columbia Records, Geffen Records, Interscope Geffen A&M Records, Island Records, Motown Records, Capitol Music Group, Def Jam Recordings and Republic Records amongst others.
