The GEO Group, Inc. is a leading provider of correctional, detention, and community reentry services in the United States, Australia, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1984 as Wackenhut Corrections Corporation (WCC) by George C. Zoley in Florida with the goal of providing private prison-related services to government agencies. Initially incorporated as a for-profit corporation under Florida law, it changed its corporate structure to a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) in 2013. Over the years The GEO Group has grown into one of the world's largest operators of correctional facilities specializing in providing outsourced management solutions to federal, state and local government agencies. It currently employs more than 19 thousand people and operates 135 correctional centers comprising approximately 91 thousand beds worldwide including those managed through joint venture partnerships. It also offers various ancillary programs such as residential reentry centers; electronic monitoring technology; Fugitive Extradition and Investigations; psychosocial/substance abuse programs focused on offender rehabilitation; investment advisory services related to infrastructure development for governments around the world; inmate transportation services among others.
