Smith & Nephew, Inc.
Smith & Nephew is a global medical technology company that develops, manufactures, and distributes devices for orthopaedic reconstruction, trauma and clinical therapies. Founded in 1856 as Smith & Nephew Richardson by Trousers manufacturer Thomas James Smith and William Holland Nephew in Hull, England, the company initially manufactured surgical instruments and dressings. In 1918 they developed a plaster of Paris bandage which was used to aid in healing fractures and this paved the way for its expansion into other areas of orthopedics. The company continued to develop new products over the years such as absorbent dressings for wound care; polyurethane casting tape, synthetic skin grafts; electrical nerve stimulators; modular hip implants; joint replacement systems and arthroscopy tools. Today Smith & Nephew’s portfolio includes more than 5,000 products across 11 business units with operations spanning 27 countries worldwide.
