Shriners Hospitals For Children, Inc.
Shriners Hospitals for Children, Inc. are a network of 22 non-profit medical facilities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico providing specialized care to children in need regardless of their family's ability to pay. The organization was founded by Shriners International as its philanthropic arm in 1922. Shriners International was formed in 1872 by members of different Masonic organizations who wanted to create an organization focused on fellowship, fun and philanthropy centered around helping children with physical needs and disabilities. Begun with a donation from an initial group of more than 500 members totaling $2 million (equal to roughly $30 million today), the first hospital opened in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1923. Since then the network has grown exponentially with the addition of nine new hospitals located throughout North America dedicated to providing pediatric orthopaedic care and rehabilitation services as well as burn treatment centers. As part of its ongoing commitment to fulfilling this mission ,the organization also provides clinical research programs at each location dedicated to expanding knowledge about diseases that affect children and exploring new treatments for them
