Shands Teaching Hospital and Clinics, Inc. is a private non-profit teaching hospital that has served the north central Florida region since 1958. Founded by physician Dr. Arthur Shands, Sr., the hospital was originally established as a response to the growing need for medical care in rural communities of Alachua County. In its early years, the hospital offered both inpatient and outpatient services such as general medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, pediatrics, radiology and oncology.
