Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, Inc., is a not-for-profit medical center located in Jacksonville, Florida. Founded in 1870, the first facility was opened as Duval County Hospital with 50 beds. The hospital was renamed Shands in 1959 after it became affiliated with the University of Florida College of Medicine and grew to 695 beds under the leadership of Joseph M. Stillman Jr., MD. Today, Shands Jacksonville is part of UF Health Jacksonville and has over 700 licensed beds and advanced specialty service offerings including cardiovascular care, cancer services, neuroscience care and sports medicine. The medical center also provides leading research and educational programs for students through its affiliation with the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville Campus. As one of northeast Florida’s largest employers with more than 1,900 employees, Shands Jacksonville strives to provide outstanding patient outcomes through compassionate care for every person who enters their facility.
