Seafarers International Union
The Seafarers International Union (SIU) is a labor union founded in 1938 by three seafaring unions that merged together. Since then, it has grown to become the largest maritime union in North America, representing about 35,000 members working on ships and barges of all sizes. The SIU provides job security for its members through collective bargaining agreements negotiated with companies employing them. Among other benefits, it also provides education opportunities including tuition assistance and training courses which help members stay up-to-date with safety regulations and industry trends. Aside from helping its members secure employment and additional benefits, the SIU actively lobbies to protect their rights as employees both domestically and internationally. It also works closely with government organizations such as the US Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security to ensure that the vessels they work on are safe for navigation.
