Save Mart Supermarkets is a chain of grocery stores operating in Northern California and Northern Nevada. The company began in 1952 when Michael Piazzoni purchased three small neighborhood grocery stores located in Modesto, Turlock, and Merced – the first Save Mart store opened that same year. In 1960, post-war US expansion led to rapid growth for Save Mart; by then the chain had grown to eight stores. In 1970, Save Mart opened its first warehouse store and became the first grocery store chain to feature warehouse prices on a wide selection of products. Throughout the decades following, the company continued to rapidly expand throughout Northern California and into Nevada; as of 2018 they were operating 219 stores including 136 supermarkets operated by corporate entities and 83 independently owned affiliates. Today, Save Mart is widely known for their quality customer service, ample selection of goods at low prices, as well as for their involvement in local communities through charitable contributions and donations.
