Qualcomm Incorporated
Qualcomm Incorporated is an American multinational semiconductor and telecommunications company based in San Diego, California. It was founded in 1985 by Irwin Jacobs, Andrew Viterbi, Adelia Coffman, and Franklin Antonio who were all faculty members at UC San Diego. Its initial products were echo cancellers used for digital satellite transmissions that were designed to improve call accuracy for cell phones. Qualcomm went public in 1991 and quickly grew through the 1990s due to its development of CDMA technology which became the industry standard for 3G mobile communications networks. In 2009 Qualcommacquired Atheros Communications with a view to gaining a foothold into WiFi technology and expanding their overall presence within the mobile communications market. Today Qualcomm offers a range of products including chipsets and software solutions tailored to mobile device makers as well as network operators across multiple industries such as automotive, healthcare, education, etc.
