Princeton University
Princeton University is a private Ivy League research university located in Princeton, New Jersey. Founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey by then-Governor Jonathan Belcher and eight trustees, it was originally an all-male college dedicated to educating future ministers of the Protestant faith. In 1896, it became a coeducational institute and changed its name from the College of New Jersey to Princeton University. Since then, it has grown into one of the world's most prestigious universities with more than 8,478 students enrolled across 36 academic departments from undergraduate through doctoral levels. Today Princeton offers support for faculty research and innovation in areas such as social sciences, engineering and applied sciences and computer science. It also provides extensive financial aid programs for students who demonstrate need based on family income or other factors. The university boasts a vast library system with holdings across 9 million books and 11 million manuscripts, making it one of the largest libraries in North America.
