MidAmerican Energy Co is an energy holding company based in Des Moines, Iowa. Founded in 1995, MidAmerican Energy was created to serve as the parent company of local utility companies providing natural gas and electric services to homes and businesses across several states. The company began with just one utility provider; however, it has since grown to include eight regulated utilities operating in 11 states: Iowa, Illinois, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, California (primarily from solar generation), Oregon and Washington. Today MidAmerican Energy is owned by Berkshire Hathaway Inc., and serves more than 7 million customers throughout its service area. It has a portfolio of over 17 million megawatt hours of wind-powered energy generating capacity through its subsidiaries as well as other forms of renewable energy including solar power and geothermal.
