Mercury General Corp
Mercury General Corp. is a publicly-traded insurance company based in Los Angeles, California established in 1960 by George Joseph. It primarily focuses on providing personal auto insurance to the California market and has since expanded its reach throughout more than 12 states within the U.S., offering a variety of automobile, homeowners, commercial and recreational vehicle products and services. By 1997, Mercury Insurance was one of the largest automobile insurers in the state of California with over $1 billion dollars in annual revenue and the second-largest private passenger auto insurer after State Farm. In 2011, Mercury's revenues were up 16% from 2010 numbers at 3.44 billion dollars per year with 33% coming from general insurance operations and 67% from specialty lines which included financial services as well as underwriting for aviation and inland marine exposures within the US markets during that year. Since then they have continued to grow their business through both organic growth as well as strategic acquisitions outside of their core personal car business including finally entering the New York market this past June 2020 with two new subsidiaries specifically created for that purpose called Mercury Indemnity Company of New York & Select Insurance Company of North Carolina Inc..
