Mattel Inc. is an American multinational toy manufacturing company founded in 1945 by Harold "Matt" Matson and Elliot Handler with Ruth Handler as the Chief Executive Officer. After a short run as a picture frame business, the two decided to start producing toys. In its first year of production Mattel produced only four products: Picture Frames, Uke-a-Doodle, together with the its signature doll; Barbie which was released in 1959. Since then, Mattel has become one of the world's largest toy manufacturers as they now produce many lines of toys and games including Hot Wheels die-cast cars, American Girl dolls and Fisher-Price preschool toys among many others. Through acquisitions Mattel now owns brands such as Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots (MEGO), Thomas & Friends wooden railway series (Learning Curve) and Mega Bloks construction sets (Mega Brands). The brand places emphasis on long lasting relationships between customers, employees and consumers portraying it's slogan that “Play Matters” emphasizing children’s importance while also furthering their mission statement that states “Inspiring enjoyable moments of joy through play!”
