Howard University
Howard University is a private, federally-chartered historically black university located in Washington D.C., US. Founded in 1867 as a result of the Second Freedman’s Bureau Act, it was originally called “The Freemen’s College for colored people”. The school was named after General Oliver O. Howard and it opened its doors on April 4th, 1867 with just nine student registrants and three teachers. In October of the same year, Howard welcomed its first president Joseph Cammack who served until his death in 1872 and after which he was succeeded by Dr Mordecai Wyatt Johnson who served until 1926 when James Nabrit assumed the role of President to become the first African American to lead one of America's leading universities. By 1930 enrollment had reached 1000 students and 32 years later saw an increase to 8500 students making it one of the largest single-campus HBCUs at that time. Today Howard remains at the forefront of higher education with more than 10,000 undergraduates and graduates studying over 120 areas of study through 12 schools & colleges culminating in numerous professional degrees including law medicine, nursing pharmacology and divinity studies (just to name a few).
