The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is a biomedical research organization that was established in 1953 by the aviator, business tycoon and philanthropist Howard Hughes. It’s headquarters were originally located in Miami, Florida before moving to Chevy Chase, Maryland in 1961. HHMI has grown to become the largest private supporter of scientific research in the United States and its mission is to advance biomedical research and science education for the benefit of humanity. It operates as a non-profit organization awarding grants to scientists around the world who can demonstrate their dedication to exploring new areas of science through creative approaches and innovative strategies. The institute also supports laboratory research programs, undergraduate education across various disciplines, international collaborations and graduate education at universities throughout the United States. HHMI has awarded more than $20 billion in research funding since its inception while supporting more than 4 000 investigators at over 60 leading universities over five decades.
