HITACHI is a Japanese company that has been in business for over 110 years. Founded in 1910 by electrical engineer Namihei Odaira, the company primarily focused on industrial machinery and equipment until the 1960s when it began to diversify into consumer electronics and components. HITACHI entered the computer industry in 1959 and during the 1970s had developed its first large-scale computer. In 2002, HITACHI acquired IBM's hard disk drive business and eventually became one of the world’s largest storage device manufacturers. The growth of its semiconductor business saw them become one of the top 10 semiconductor companies by 2008. Today, their businesses are diverse, ranging from energy systems to industrial components to healthcare products, telecommunications and information technology (IT) systems. Recently they have made significant investments in research & development with focus on green technology initiatives as well as expanding IT operations across many industries including finance, retail, transportation and manufacturing sectors.
