Guitar Center, Inc., a California-based musical instrument retailer and retailer of professional audio equipment, began in 1959 as a home-based business. The first retail store opened in Hollywood, California in 1964, becoming the prototype for what is now a nationwide chain of 330 stores located in almost every U.S. state. In 1997, Guitar Center was acquired by national electronics retailer Circuit City; however, this acquisition only lasted five years before being sold to Bain Capital and then floated on the stock exchange. Today Guitar Center is one of the largest retailers of musical instruments and professional audio equipment worldwide with more than $2 billion in annual sales. It offers everything from guitar strings to digital pianos to recording software as well as repairs for virtually any type of instrument or Professional Audio/AV product at its service centers nationwide without customers needing an appointment.
