FirstEnergy Corp is a diversified energy company headquartered in Akron, Ohio. It delivers electricity to customers in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States and provides natural gas delivery services to customers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia and Maryland. The company dates back to 1997 when it was formed through the merger of GPU Inc. and Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company. GPU Inc. had existed since 1931, while Cleveland Electric Illuminating had been supplying electric service since 1906. FirstEnergy has evolved over the years and currently operates 10 utilities throughout its service territory, including Pennsylvania Power Company (Penn Power), Met-Ed and Toledo Edison among others. Through these operating companies, FirstEnergy serves approximately six million retail customers with an estimated annual load of more than 51 million megawatt hours across its entire system.
