Consolidated Edison, Inc. (Con Ed) is one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the United States. Con Ed, headquartered in New York City, provides electric, gas and steam service to customers in New York City, Westchester County and parts of Long Island. Con Ed traces its roots back to 1823 when it was founded as The New York Gas Light Company by a group of businessmen who wanted to provide reliable lighting for businesses and homes alike. Over the years, Con Ed has grown by acquiring other utility companies such as Steam Heat Corporation of Brooklyn (1884), Metropolitan Electric Company (1901) and The Bronx Gas & Electric Company (1903). Today, Con Ed employs 14,000 people across its entire service region with total assets totaling more than $63 billion.
