Blue Shield of California
Blue Shield of California is an independent member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, a national federation of 36 independent and locally operated health insurance organizations in the United States. Blue Shield was originally founded in California in 1939 as two separate entities – Breeze Development Corporation and Physicians Service. These two businesses were established to meet the needs of people who lacked access to affordable health care, at a time when healthcare costs were high and insurance coverage was almost non-existent. In 1985, Physicians Service merged with The Blue Cross of California and changed its name to The Blueshield 3 years later. Since then, Blue Shield has grown significantly, providing health plan administration services for more than 4 million members in 2019 alone. Today it offers a wide range of products including HMOs, PPOs, EPOs, POS plans and Medicare Advantage plans across California and Sacramento counties; additionally they have recently expanded into other states such as Nevada and New York with their Health Scope U.S plan offering coverage options nationwide. With over 8 decades worth of experience providing quality healthcare solutions tailored to their customers’ needs, Blue Shield continues to be one of the leading providers of health benefits throughout the state today.
