Bayer AG is a German pharmaceutical and life science company founded in 1863 by Friedrich Bayer and Johann Friedrich Weskott. With its headquarters located in Leverkusen, Germany, the company employs over 103,000 people in 2020 and operates in approximately 150 countries worldwide. In addition to producing and marketing drugs for the treatment of human diseases, Bayer has also been active in agricultural sciences since founding its Agricultural Division in 1888. The division was responsible for creating products such as copper oxychloride, DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and other biocides which helped revolutionize crop production throughout the world. These innovations have allowed Bayer to become one of the leading companies producing agrochemicals with around 20% market share today. Outside of agriculture and health care, Bayer has also expanded into other areas such as animal nutrition through Purina pet food business; material science under Covestro subsidiary; consumer health via OTC over-the-counter medication lines; digital healthcare tools; coatings, adhesives and more. Today it remains a leader among global multinationals with revenues totalling 44 billion euros in 2019.
