The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a non-profit organization with a mission to save lives from cancer. Founded in 1913, it is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by fostering research, providing information and education, advocating for policies that support cancer research efforts, and providing access to care for those affected by the disease. It has grown into one of the largest voluntary health organizations in United States, with multiple sub-organizations across the country. ACS works through community programs and services such as patient navigation services, free lodging for cancer patients hospitalized far away form home and special events like Relay For Life. It also provides free or low-cost rides to chemotherapy sessions and other treatments via its Road To Recovery program nationally. ACS's expertise has enabled it to consistently produce effective campaigns aimed at reducing smoking rates amongst youth and informing the public about early detection screening tests which are key towards prevention,. In addition, they have made strides in funding groundbreaking scientific discoveries related specifically to cardiovascular diseases as well as other forms of cancers—notably breast, lung and colorectal cancers The society has established itself as an international leader in advocacy on behalf of all people affected by cancer helping fund hundreds of clinical trials each year worldwide
